How It Works
This calculator works out your exact age in years, months, days, hours and minutes from your date of birth. It accounts for leap years, varying month lengths and the current UK time zone, GMT or BST depending on the date. It also shows your age on any future or past date rather than only today, so entering a target date tells you how old you will be, or were, at that point. Results appear in several units at once, including total days and total hours lived.
The arithmetic behind it is simple enough to check by hand. Start with the current year minus the birth year, then subtract one if your birthday has not yet happened this calendar year. Months follow the same pattern, taking the current month minus the birth month and borrowing from the years if the answer comes out negative, and days borrow from the months in turn. UK legal convention holds that you turn 18 at midnight on the anniversary of your birth, not at the exact hour you were born and not on the day before.
Knowing your precise age matters for pension eligibility, insurance quotes, driving licence applications and legal thresholds. Light part-time work is permitted from 13. At 16 you can leave school in England, consent to medical treatment, buy a lottery ticket and marry in Scotland with consent, and 17 brings a provisional driving licence. Full legal majority arrives at 18, with voting, contracts, jury service and buying alcohol, while 21 allows you to supervise a learner driver and to adopt. The full National Living Wage rate of £12.71 an hour in 2026/27 applies from 25.
Later ages carry more money attached. The minimum age for taking a defined contribution pension is 55, rising to 57 in April 2028. State Pension age is currently 66, moving to 67 between 2026 and 2028 and to 68 from 2044. A free TV licence at 75 has been restricted to Pension Credit recipients since 2020. Two administrative dates sit alongside those, since DVLA licence renewal falls due at 70 and every 3 years afterwards, and the State Pension claim window opens 4 months before you reach pension age.
Counting in days rather than years gives a different sense of scale. The average year runs 365.2425 days, so 18 years is roughly 6,575 days, 939 weeks or 216 months. Thirty years is about 10,957 days, 1,565 weeks and 360 months, and 65 years comes to around 23,741 days. State Pension age at 66 is about 24,107 days, and the centenarian threshold sits at 36,525 days. Anyone born on 29 February celebrates legally on 28 February in non-leap years for most UK purposes, including driving licence and alcohol law. ONS figures for 2023 put life expectancy at birth at 79.0 years for men and 82.8 for women, well below the projections made in the 1990s after longevity gains stalled during the 2010s.
Working out the gap between two people means subtracting one date of birth from the other. Someone born on 15 March 1980 whose partner was born on 22 September 1985 has a partner 5 years, 6 months and 7 days younger. That gap carries financial weight. Pension survivor benefits, life insurance pricing and inheritance tax planning all take it into account, and a gap of ten years or more to a spouse tends to produce higher annuity rates, because a younger surviving spouse means a longer payout, alongside lower upfront pension transfer values. State Pension top-ups for spouses ended with the New State Pension rules in 2016.
Small date differences move real money. Insurance quotes change on your birthday, and most insurers use 23:59 on the day before it, so a quote pulled a day early can price differently. Marriage Allowance is worth £252 a year whatever the age gap, provided one partner is a non-taxpayer and the other pays basic rate. A Child Trust Fund for anyone born between 2002 and 2011 becomes accessible at 18, and a Junior ISA converts to an adult ISA automatically at the same age. The ISA contribution year, by contrast, resets on 6 April for everybody and takes no notice of your birthday.
Example: Born 15 March 1990
- Age today (April 2026): 36 years, 0 months, 27 days
- Total days lived: approx. 13,176
- Total hours: approx. 316,224
- Next milestone birthday (40): 15 March 2030
Frequently Asked Questions
- How is age calculated when the months and days roll over?
- Take the current year minus the birth year, then subtract one if you have not yet reached your birthday this year. Months work the same way, current month minus birth month, borrowing from the years if that goes negative, and days borrow from the months. UK convention is that you turn 18 on the anniversary of your birth, not the day before. Someone born on 29 February is treated as celebrating on 28 February in non-leap years for most UK legal purposes.
- At what age can I take my pension and State Pension?
- A defined contribution pension can be accessed from 55, rising to 57 in April 2028. State Pension age is currently 66, moving to 67 between 2026 and 2028, and to 68 from 2044. The claim window for the State Pension opens 4 months before you reach pension age, so it is worth diarising rather than waiting to be contacted. A free TV licence at 75 has been limited to Pension Credit recipients since 2020.
- How many days old am I at 18, 30 or 65?
- Using an average year of 365.2425 days, 18 years works out at roughly 6,575 days, which is 939 weeks or 216 months. Thirty years is about 10,957 days, 1,565 weeks and 360 months, and 65 years comes to around 23,741 days. State Pension age at 66 is about 24,107 days, while reaching 100 means clocking up 36,525 days. The calculator gives the exact figure for your own date of birth rather than these averages.
- Does an age gap between partners affect pensions or tax?
- It can. Pension survivor benefits, life insurance pricing and inheritance tax planning all weigh the gap between two dates of birth. A difference of ten years or more to a spouse usually attracts higher annuity rates, since a younger survivor means a longer payout, though upfront pension transfer values tend to be lower. Marriage Allowance is unaffected by the gap and is worth £252 a year where one partner is a non-taxpayer and the other pays basic rate. Spousal State Pension top-ups ended under the New State Pension rules in 2016.
- When exactly does my age go up for insurance purposes?
- Most insurers treat you as a year older from 23:59 on the day before your birthday, so a quote run on the wrong side of that line can come back at a different price. Other date-driven events are fixed rather than personal. DVLA licence renewal falls at 70 and then every 3 years, a Child Trust Fund for anyone born between 2002 and 2011 becomes available at 18, a Junior ISA becomes an adult ISA at 18, and the ISA contribution year resets on 6 April regardless of when you were born.
