How It Works
The London Congestion Charge is £15 per day for driving within the Congestion Charge Zone in central London. The zone operates Monday to Friday, 7am-6pm, and weekends and bank holidays 12pm-6pm. Payment must be made by midnight on the day of travel or by midnight on the following charging day for a £17.50 late payment.
Certain vehicles are exempt or receive discounts. Electric vehicles (zero-emission capable) registered with TfL are exempt through the Cleaner Vehicle Discount. Residents within the zone receive a 90% discount. Blue Badge holders, licensed taxis, buses and some hybrid vehicles also qualify for exemptions or discounts.
Auto Pay can be set up to automatically charge your account each day your vehicle enters the zone, avoiding the risk of late payment penalties (£160, reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days). This calculator estimates your weekly and annual congestion charge costs based on how often you drive into the zone.
Example: Commuting into central London 4 days/week (petrol car)
- Daily charge: £15
- Weekly cost (4 days): £60
- Annual cost (48 working weeks): £2,880
- With Auto Pay: same cost, no penalty risk
- Zone resident discount (90%): £1.50/day = £288/year
