Disclaimer

This calculator is provided for informational purposes only and should not be considered as financial or tax advice. All calculations are performed locally in your browser — no personal data is collected or sent to our servers. Rates and thresholds are sourced from HMRC and GOV.UK and are updated for the current tax year. Always verify results with HMRC or consult a qualified professional before making financial decisions.

How It Works

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) gives you permanent residence in the UK. Most routes require 5 years of continuous lawful residence, though some (such as the partner route) have specific pathways. You must also pass the Life in the UK test and meet English language requirements at B1 level or above.

Continuous residence means you must not have been absent from the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period. This calculator checks your eligibility date based on your visa start date, calculates the total costs to date and the ILR application fee, and flags any potential issues with absences.

The ILR application fee is currently £2,885 per person. There is no IHS for ILR itself, but you continue to pay IHS on any visa extensions needed before becoming eligible. The calculator totals everything from your current visa through to ILR.

Example: Skilled Worker visa holder

  1. Visa start date: April 2021
  2. Eligible for ILR: April 2026 (5 years continuous residence)
  3. ILR application fee: £2,885
  4. Life in the UK test: £50
  5. English test (if not already exempt): approx. £170
  6. Total ILR costs: £3,105
